February 7, 2014
Dear Colonial Families:
As everyone is well aware, we have had a very rough winter so far, with Colonial missing 6 days of
schools due to snow/icy weather. By state law, students must attend school 1060 hours per year.
Within our current calendar, 2 snow days are built in through number of minutes per day the students
In order to address the additional number of days our students would need to attend due to the snow, I
am adding 10 minutes to our school day, beginning Monday, February 10, 2014. The additional time will
be 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes at the end of the day. The additional minutes will earn 2
more student days, resulting in 4 student days built into the calendar and no need for students to attend
those 4 days at the end of the school year.
The remaining 2 snow days are days that limited state of emergencies were in place. The district will be
requesting from the State Board of Education forgiveness for those days but will not know the answer
till March or April. If the days are not forgiven, or, if we have additional snow days this year, those days
will be added to the end of the school year calendar.
Below you will find the amended start and end times for the Colonial schools, beginning Monday,
February 10th. Please note the new start times so your child can be on time and not considered late.
School bus schedules have been adjusted to pick up students 5 minutes earlier and will be taking
students home in the afternoons 5 minutes later.
New start and End times
Elementary - 8:27 am – 3:19pm
Middle Schools - 7:34 am – 2:23pm
High School - 7:26 am – 2:15pm
Wallin - 7:26 am – 2:15pm
Leach - 8:27 am – 3:19pm
Currently, our last student day is Tuesday, June 10, 2014. I will keep everyone posted as to the status of
whether or that date will remain or if we have to add days to the calendar. As I am sure you all are
feeling as I am- no more snow and bring on spring!!
